0 Mystical story deserves to be told…

To wrap up our track of the month – The Bartender – we asked Victor Mikheyev, our bass player and music contributor, to say a couple of words about the history behind the track so here is a micro-essay – #checkitoutbelow!

THE BARTENDER – a mystical story (English-

I’ll have to start my tale from long ago. But this mystical story deserves to be told.

It’s the end of January, 2011. I’m sitting at home in St. Petersburg, Russia, with pianist Sergei Luzin, playing him an old recording from the late 80s (Fox Box and Room 118 projects). Hearing Dmitry Ermakov on keys, Sergei went into raptures. He began pestering me – where’s Dmitry now? How can we get in touch with him? Wouldn’t it be great to whip up a project together? But alas, I’d lost touch with Dmitry some 20 years ago. I’d heard he’d gone to England, tried to track him down through social media and a few mutual friends, but all to no avail. A week later, on February 8, Sergei’s wife rang and told me he’d died of a massive stroke. That was a cruel blow. We’d been playing together just the night before, a great rehearsal, a great jam, perfect. And then this… I just couldn’t believe it.
But what happened next was just as unbelievable. That very same evening, February 8, an unknown number rang my mobile. Usually I don’t pick up if I don’t recognise the number, but I was intrigued by the unfamiliar country code: +44. So I answered, and I’m glad I did! It was… Dmitry Ermakov. The look on my face sent my wife into a panic – she thought someone else had died. But I reassured her – not died, more like resurrected! The oddest part is that Dmitry had tracked me down via Nina, who is none other than SERGEI’s sister. Dmitry had tried to get in touch with me, too, over the years, but also drawn blank. And suddenly that day it dawned on him that Nina would know my number. Evidently the first thing Sergei did when he got to Heaven was to bring Dmitry and me together, since earthly means weren’t working.
A year later Dmitry was planning to come to St. Petersburg so we could lay down some preliminary recordings together. Anticipating his arrival, I sorted through some old musical scraps that had been lying around for a good few years by then – there was nobody to jam with, and I’d long since lost the taste for recording by myself. I found a quirky musical phrase among the snippets, something I’d played on keys and put to a hip-hop loop. For some reason the doodle was called “Cool Vodka.” I must have come up with this vaguely folky motive à la russe and vodka was the first association that came to mind. I worked it over, dressed it up more or less presentably and showed it to Dmitry when he finally came. He played a few key parts off the cuff and then, already back in England, added a truly wicked trumpet. Koos put in some fantastic drums, and I liked the piece more and more. But something was still missing. I began adding soundscapes. Put in some sexy, erotic sighs and cries. But Dmitry didn’t like this sadomaso party, I can understand why – we’d have had to slap an “18+” sticker on the track. We agreed that the soundtrack of a regular Friday night bar would better fit the title and track’s rather goofy character. And then, well we even changed the name. Probably because neither of us drink vodka and don’t want to advertise it.

***

0 Review: MetaQuorum – Jonathan Livingston

  • June 13, 2016

Reviews of new single Jonathan Livingston are starting to come in – here’s a short one on Progarchy.

Progarchy

Jonathan Livingston

UK based progressive rock duo MetaQuorum, in existence for a few years, have released a new single called “Jonathan Livingston” recently. When it comes to the progressive and atmospheric variants of rock music, bands coming from Europe have carried a rich history and undeniable reputation of taking it to unmatchable extremes, so a band like MetaQuorum immediately compels Progarchy to take notice, and share with readers thoughts on the band’s new single.

The almost four-minute song creates dreamy atmospheres with bass and keyboard works that strikes an excellent balance between heaviness and melody, and the drum patterns on top of it amplify the melodic element further. The music transitions between these extremes and smoothly moves from one passage to another, making the four-minute duration seems almost momentary. The song follows a simple structure but the music is well-written and played. Drawing parallels with other bands would be a mistake, as…
